The derelict mill was adapted with the minimum of alterations, retaining its character while re-instating original features.

All the rubble from demolition work was crushed and re-used in the build; paths and parking areas are constructed from permeable gravel paving to reduce surface water run-off.

Felin Hedd is heated by a ground source heat pump system and the grassed areas used turf set aside during the installation of the ground loops in a nearby field. This means the luxury of space and that underfloor heating is in all rooms giving a very comfortable atmosphere no matter how cold as guests very often comment on this.

As part of the renovation, a dedicated loft was constructed as a roost for Brown Long Eared Bats and native species hedging has been planted to enhance the habitat.

On completion, the barn’s energy performance was assessed as class A , and during the day all the electrical power used in the building is provided by solar photovoltaic panels, while water is pumped from its own borehole.
